Our new Bicycle Friendly business program
To help cyclists ride to work we are encouraging businesses to invest in bicycle facilities in their workplaces. Either at construction stages or retrofitting, there are so many benefits. Complete the Application Form and you will be able to use our Bicycle Friendly logo.
The Logo
The Bicycle Friendly logo is based on the New Zealand Cycle Friendly Awards through their Cycling Advocates Network (CAN). Mr Barton van Laar, Bike Safe President said “We looked all over the world for suitable graphics for our Bicycle Friendly program and found the best one next door in New Zealand. We approached them for permission to use the concept, which we received in September 2011 from their Secretary. With a few minor tweaks here it is…
“Thanks again CAN. Their mantra is more people on bikes, more often. What do they want? Connected cycleways in cities, and shoulders on key rural roads. On-road cycle training in schools and for adults who want to cycle for transport. A new, fresh public education programme for safe road use. We agree!”
Why should businesses be bicycle friendly?
By participating in the Bicycle Friendly business campaign, cyclists and business owners are working together to create and encourage safe cycling and healthy businesses.
Bicycle Friendly businesses help to encourage more cycling by becoming supportive of bicycle commuting and improve bicycle access for their visitors and customers. This has far-reaching effects – not only for our health and environment, but also for our local economy.
Why? Many local businesses provide amenities and services as a way to encourage cycling. Some see the reduction of car parking demand as the prime benefit, others want to contribute to sustainable development in their community.
A growth in cycling increases safety and awareness of cyclists, promotes better infrastructure development, encourages active lifestyles and encourages us to shop and dine locally. It can help minimize traffic congestion and is often faster, cheaper and less of a hassle than driving.
To encourage employees to cycle to work, businesses should provide secure, accessible and undercover bicycle parking facilities and appropriate change room facilities with lockers nearby.
The target formula is: 1 BIKE RACK = 10 EMPLOYEES; 1 SHOWER = 5 BIKE RACKS
